2009 Scholarship Recipients
Garrett G. Colgan, Chestnut Hill, MA
Garrett has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for five years. He is a 2009 graduate of Brookline High School, Brookline, MA, where he was an honor roll student. Garrett was a member of the high school junior varsity baseball team for three years, and shared the title of co-captain in 2008. He played varsity baseball in 2009. He played Brookline Recreational Basketball for two years, and his 2008 team was undefeated and won the team championship. Garrett played high school varsity golf for four years. His team qualified for the Division 1 State Finals, and finished sixth in the state. Garrett was a recipient of the 2007 Coaches Award and the 2008 Most Improved Player Award.
As a member of St. Ignatius Church in Brighton, Garrett volunteered with meal preparations and serving Thanksgiving dinner to homeless men and women at the Shattuck Shelter in Dorchester, MA.
From 2003-2005, Garrett worked as a newspaper hawker for the Boston Globe and the Cape Cod Times in Falmouth, MA. For four years, he has been a caddy at Oyster Harbors Country Club, Osterville, MA, and from 2003 to the present, he has been employed by Kenzie Kids, The Mall at Chestnut Hill, MA, as a stockroom assistant and merchandising assistant.
Garrett will attend Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY, majoring in business. He will play Division 3 golf.
Erik C. Dahl, East Sandwich, MA
Erik has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for eight years. He is a 2009 graduate of Sandwich High School. He was a member of the Key Club.
Erik has been a member of the Sandwich High School soccer, tennis, basketball and golf teams. He has played Sandwich Little League, Babe Ruth and Senior Babe Ruth baseball, as well as Sandwich youth soccer and travel soccer, and Sandwich Youth basketball. He has been a member of the Mashpee Boys and Girls Club for ten years. He is a Little League baseball assistant coach. Erik was a member of the Frozen Ropes Training Center College Bound Baseball Team, a program that is instrumental in preparing and placing baseball players for collegiate competition.
Erik is a member of Christ Chapel Youth Group, Centerville, where he is on the Youth Leadership Council. He prepared and served meals to the homeless on Christ Chapel’s Day of Hospitality. He attended Christ Chapel Vacation Bible School, where he ran recreational programs. He made summer trips to Onancock, VA, Acuna, Mexico, and Nassau, Bahamas, with his church group, where he helped to build and renovate homes for the poor. He has participated in the Hyannis Walk for the Homeless for three years. As a member of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief organization that provides spiritual and physical aid to victims of war, poverty, natural disaster and disease, he has filled, packed and loaded gift boxes for under-privileged children. He has volunteered for Starlight Ministries, which serves homeless people in Boston.
Erik’s work experience includes caddying at The Ridge Club, Sandwich, maintenance painting for the Cotuit Historical Association, and umpiring Little League and Senior League baseball games for Bourne, Sandwich and Barnstable Youth Baseball. He has worked for Thrifty Rental, and currently is a transportation provider for Dr. John DeBrine.
Eric will attend James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA, where he will major in finance.
Ryan P. Donovan, Mansfield, MA
Ryan has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for six years. He is a 2009 graduate of Xaverian High School, Westwood, MA, where he was an honor student. He was nominated to attend the National Student Leadership Conference in New York, NY, and the National Youth Leadership Forum in Washington, DC. Ryan played on the junior varsity and varsity golf teams, and was named the junior varsity’s Most Valuable Player in his sophomore year. He ran indoor and outdoor track during high school.
Ryan attended the Xaverian Leadership Institute at Stonehill College, a five-day Servant Leadership retreat for seniors, which prepares participants for leadership and service responsibilities during their senior year. His community service includes “Christmas in the City,” which provides unfortunate inner-city children with games, food and presents for Christmas. He traveled with a Xaverian High School group to Peru to hand-deliver clothes and medicine to people living along the Amazon River. He served among other senior leaders on a Xaverian sophomore retreat. Ryan volunteered for the Mansfield Food Pantry, the Xaverian Brothers Open House, and the Town of Mansfield graveyard restoration project. He was also a physics tutor for Xaverian High School students.
Ryan has worked for the Town of Mansfield Recreation Department as a flag football referee, at Wannamoisett Country Club, Rumford, RI, as a caddy, and at Gillette Stadium, Foxboro, MA, as a food vendor and hawker. He currently works at Best Buy, Mansfield, MA, as a sales associate.
Ryan enjoys playing acoustic guitar. He holds a First Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, and is a junior member at Walpole Country Club, Walpole, MA.
Ryan will attend Elon University, Elon, North Carolina, pursuing a dual major in physics and mechanical engineering.
Gillian M. Dudeck, Deep River, CT
Gillian has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for four years. She is a graduate of Miss Porter’s School, Farmington, CT, where she achieved honor roll or high honor roll every semester. She is a member of the Junior Cum Laude Society. Gillian was a member of the Model United Nations Club, in which students debate international issues and negotiate with supporters and adversaries to resolve conflicts and mobilize international cooperation. Gillian’s was the only school from the U.S. invited to attend the Model United Nations Conference that was held in the Netherlands. She was one of ten students selected from the school to attend the conference during her sophomore, junior and senior years.
Gillian was a writer for Salmagundy, the school newspaper, and was editor of the sports section. She was a Junior Advisor, providing support and mediation for underclassmen in the dorms. She was co-captain of the spirit squad, and played soccer and basketball. Gillian played #1 position on the varsity golf team for three years and was captain her senior year. She placed first in the 2008 9-Hole New England Independent School Championship, second in the 2009 Founder’s League Championship, was the 2009 Founder’s League Player of the Year, and was the 2006 and 2008 Cape Cod Junior Golf Association Player of the Year. Gillian received the Coaches Award in her freshman year, and was named most valuable player during her sophomore, junior and senior years.
Gillian has volunteered for Food Share, and has participated in the Relay for Life. During the summers she has volunteered with the Harwich harbormaster, collecting water samples and working the clam and oyster seed. She also gave tours at the shellfish lab. For two years, Gillian has worked in the pro shop at Cranberry Valley Golf Course.
Gillian will attend Hamilton College, Clinton, NY, possibly majoring in marine science, environmental science, or foreign relations. Gillian is one of 35 freshmen who have been selected to spend the first semester studying abroad in London, England. During August, 2009, she will be participating in Habitat for Humanity at Hamilton College.
Joshua P. Dugas, East Falmouth, MA
Josh has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for three years. He is a 2009 graduate of Falmouth High School, Falmouth, MA, where he was a member of the Key Club and the Math National Honor Society (Mu Alpha Theta). Josh played freshman soccer and baseball. As a sophomore, he played first and second doubles on the varsity tennis team, which won the Division 1 State Championship that year. He was an Atlantic Coast League Tennis All-Star, and Boston Globe Honorable Mention recipient.
Josh played Little League baseball for six years, was a Falmouth All-Star for six years, and also played Falmouth Babe Ruth and AAU baseball. Josh started playing golf during his junior year in high school. He played on the varsity golf team that year, and received the Rookie of the Year Award. Josh was co-captain of the high school golf team during his senior year.
Josh’s community service includes the Falmouth Road Race, the Annual Falmouth Walk, which benefits numerous Falmouth charities, and Recovery Without Walls, for which he helped organize the charity golf and tennis tournaments.
Josh works at Cape Cod Country Club and New Seabury Country Club, on the driving range and in general maintenance.
Josh will be attending the Junior Players Golf Academy of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, as an Academic Student attending the Hilton Head Preparatory School. The JPGA helps to prepare junior golfers to compete in National Level tournament play and receive a college scholarship. Upon leaving the JPGA, Josh will attend a four-year college to pursue a career in golf.
Jeffrey R. Duggan, Orleans, MA
Jeff has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for three years. He is a 2009 graduate of Nauset Regional High School, and a member of the National Honor Society. During high school, Jeff played junior varsity and varsity baseball, was a member of the varsity golf team for four years, and captain of the golf team for two years. He was the recipient of the 2009 Coaches Award for baseball. Jeff was a member of the student council, the ski club, and the wrestling team. He played on the Orleans Recreational basketball team for four years.
Jeff was the 2008 Massachusetts Division 2 Individual Golf State Champion and the 2008 Division 2 South Individual Sectional Champion. He was an ACL Golf All-Star for three years, a 2008 Boston Herald All-Scholastic, and the 2008 Boston Globe Division 2 Golfer of the Year. Jeff received the ACL Individual Golf Sportsmanship Award and the Nauset Regional High School Coaches Award. The Nauset golf team qualified for the Division 2 state final in both his junior and senior years, finishing seventh and second respectively.
Jeff’s community service includes work with the Orleans Recreation Department in the capacity of Youth Basketball Coach and Youth Baseball Umpire.
Jeff has worked at Cape Cod National Golf Club, Brewster, MA, as golf bag room attendant and caddie for five years. He is also an assistant boat builder for Cape Island Boats, Orleans.
Jeff will be attending St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY, majoring in business. He will play on the golf team.
Cameron T. Geggatt, E. Falmouth, MA
Cam has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for three years. He is a 2009 graduate of Falmouth High School, Falmouth, MA. While in high school, Cam played on the school’s baseball, soccer, golf and hockey teams. He was co-captain of the golf team during his senior year. He played varsity hockey for three years, and varsity golf for four years. Cam was named most improved golfer in 2008, and was nominated for the “No Guff” Award in 2009, which is presented to students who show zero tolerance for verbal abuse.
Cam played Falmouth and Bourne Summer Hockey, Falmouth Youth Hockey, and Babe Ruth Baseball. He is the recipient of the Falmouth Hockey Booster Scholarship, and the Falmouth Youth Hockey League Memorial Scholarship.
Cam’s community service includes the Cape Cod Road Race, the Falmouth Road Race, Falmouth VIPS Golf Tournament, the Nicole Goulding Memorial Golf Tournament, Barnstable County Fair parking, and the Cape Cod Five Pops Music Festival.
Cam will attend Johnson & Wales University, North Miami, FL, majoring in sports/entertainment/event management with a concentration in golf.
Joshua J. Hussey, Norwood, MA
Josh has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for six years. He attended Xaverian Brothers High School, and is a 2009 graduate of Norwood High School. Josh was on the junior varsity wrestling team, played on the football team for three years, and has played Babe Ruth baseball. He has been a member of the C.Y.O. (Catholic Youth Organization) basketball team for several years. His team placed second in the 2009 Eastern State Division tournament.
Josh has volunteered for the Norwood basketball Winter Carnival, and Xaverian‘s “Christmas in the City,” which provides games, food and gifts for inner-city children. He is currently a Eucharistic Minister at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Norwood.
Josh’s employment includes The Country Club, Brookline (caddy), AJD & Associates, Walpole, Honey Baked Ham Company, Norwood, St. Catherine of Siena Church Rectory Office, Norwood, and East Bay Grill at Pine Hills, Plymouth.
Josh plays guitar and saxophone, composes music, and enjoys golf, fishing and snowboarding. He is American Red Cross certified CPR/AED-Adult.
Josh will attend Curry College, Milton, MA, majoring in communications.
Amanda L. Levy, Nantucket, MA
Amanda has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for five years. She is a 2009 graduate of Nantucket High School, Nantucket, MA. She is a member of the National Honor Society. Amanda’s community service within the Nantucket Chapter of the National Honor Society includes setting up for the Beatlemania Concert, modeling clothes for the S.T.A.R.S. (Sports and Therapeutic Accessible Recreation) Fashion Show and Auction, and organizing a school-wide project with a small group of students to educate their peers about domestic violence and sexual assault prevention in conjunction with A Safe Place, Inc., Nantucket. Amanda’s volunteer activities also include running the annual “Our Island Home” Fair to raise funds for the residents and the nursing facility, the Parkinson’s Disease Walk, and the Toys for Tots gift drive. She was a Nantucket Athenaeum Literacy volunteer as an English language tutor to a Spanish-speaking student.
Amanda was a member of the French Club and the PPAA Club (Peers Promoting Action Awareness), was a student council representative, and a Deputy Superintendent Student Forum Committee member. She is the recipient of scholastic awards for Excellence in French II, Excellence in Honors English II, Excellence in Honors Precalculus, and Excellence in Journalism.
Amanda played varsity golf for four years, leading the Nantucket Boys Golf Team to become Lighthouse League champions all four years. She played #1 position during her senior year. In her sophomore and junior years, Amanda played in the Massachusetts IAA Girls Individual South Sectional Golf Tournament at Woodland Golf Club, Auburndale, MA. She was named a Cape Cod Times All-Star, a Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic and was named Nantucket Boy’s Golf Team’s Most Dedicated Player and Most Outstanding Player. She received the Athletic Director’s Scholar-Athlete Award, and the Inquirer & Mirror Sportsmanship Award for Golf.
Amanda has worked at Miacomet Golf Course, Beach Glass of Nantucket in sales and merchandise, and Nantucket Golf Club.
Amanda will attend Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA. Her major is currently undeclared. She will play on the golf team.
Sean P. O’Neil, Wilton, CT
Sean has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for four years. He is a graduate of Wilton High School, Wilton, CT. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society.
Sean was president of the High School Youth Group of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Wilton. He was youth group representative during his sophomore and junior years, and a leader of the 2008 Emmaus Retreat Liturgy Team. In 2008, Sean was co-chairman of the Lobster Bake Fundraiser. For two summers, he traveled with a Group Mission to Kingston, Jamaica, to work with school children and the elderly. Sean was a first grade religious education teacher at Our Lady of Fatima. He was the recipient of the 2009 Knights of Columbus Scholarship.
Sean played varsity golf and varsity hockey. He is a recipient of the 2009 Iron Man Varsity Hockey Award, presented to the team member who never missed a practice and who never missed a game, and the 2009 Sportsmanship Varsity Hockey Award. He played on the Ridgefield, CT, Youth Hockey team for six years. Sean’s 2008-2009 varsity golf team won the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference Championship. Sean is a five-time Junior Golf Club Champion at Pocasset Golf Club, Pocasset, MA.
Sean has worked at Pocasset Golf Club for the past four summers.
Sean will attend Carroll School of Management, Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA. He will major in business management.
Casey L. Spofford, East Sandwich, MA
Casey has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for ten years. He started playing golf when he was four years old. He is a 2009 graduate of Sandwich High School, where he played on the varsity golf team for four years. In 2005, his high school golf team won the state championship. The Sandwich High School golf team won their division title during the four years Casey played on the golf team. He was a Cape and Islands All-Star in 2006 and 2009. Casey was named the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association Player of the Year in 2001 and 2003, and has placed in over 30 of our tournaments.
Casey’s community service includes working at the American Legion Youth Baseball games, held in Sandwich, as grounds crew. He was responsible for cleaning the field and dugouts, and lining the field before every game.
He worked in maintenance at The Ridge Club for three years. He is currently employed by the Dan’l Webster Inn in Sandwich.
Casey will be attending Husson University in Bangor, Maine, majoring in golf management. He may play on the golf team during his college career.
John R. Tassinari, Andover, MA
John has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for four years. He is a 2009 graduate of St. John’s Preparatory School, Danvers, MA, where he was on the Headmaster’s List and the Principal’s List, and was an honor roll student for four years. He is a member of the National Honor Society. He was on the Student Advisory Council throughout his four years at St. John’s.
John played Division 1 volleyball for three years, and was captain of the team his senior year. During that time the team won the Division 1 North Championship and State Championship. John played on the golf, football, and basketball teams. He ran spring track and field. He was a member of the Prep Pride Club and the Investment Club.
John’s community service includes the Walk for Hospice of the North Shore, Danvers, MA, and Lazarus House food pantry, Lawrence, MA. He was a volunteer coach for St. John’s freshman basketball team, and a volunteer for the Andover Junior Football League. He was a tour guide for St. John’s Preparatory School’s open house.
John has worked as a cashier/stock person at CVS Pharmacy in Harwich, MA, assistant manager/ice cream server at Dairy Queen, Harwich, self-employed landscaper/snow removal, Harwich, and valet/bus boy at Chapin’s Restaurant, Dennis, MA.
His interests include golf, films, personal training, basketball, swimming, skimboarding, hiking, travel, music and computers.
John will attend Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, majoring in business. He will play club golf.
Melanie A. Young, N. Falmouth, MA
Melanie has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for eight years. She is a 2009 graduate of Falmouth High School, where she was an honor student and a member of the National Art Honor Society. She was recognized for Outstanding Academic Achievement while Participating in Athletics. She was active in the Senior Internship Project, which involved daily work in the classroom at Mullen Hall School in Falmouth as a teacher’s assistant.
Melanie was a member of the Key Club, Spanish Club, Junior Class Prom Committee, Junior Work Day, Senior Class Auction Committee, and Psychology Outreach Club. She is a member of the Massachusetts Golf Association and the United States Golf Association.
Melanie played varsity golf for four years, was captain of the golf team her senior year, and placed third in the 2009 Mass Bay Golf League Individual Championship. She was named Boston Globe / Mass Bay League All-Star, and Atlantic Coast League All-Star.
Melanie’s community service includes the Cape Cod Cranberry Festival, Falmouth Middle School and Junior High School golf programs, Falmouth Service Center Food Pantry, Falmouth Town Meeting audio assistant, North Falmouth Thrift Shop, North Falmouth Congregational Church Youth Ministry, Relay for Life, and the Annual Falmouth Walk.
Melanie has worked for the Falmouth Enterprise and Beach Plum Bakery, Cataumet, MA. She currently has her own babysitting business and also works for the Cape Cod Bagel Company.
Melanie will attend the University of Hartford, West, CT. Her major is currently undeclared.
