CCPGA JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

2011 Recipients recieved $500 scholarships from Junior Golf Director John Flynn and Kevan Evangelista, PGA, Cape Cod Junior Golf Chairman

 

Meghan K. Andersen

Meghan K. Andersen, East Falmouth, MA

Meg has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for four seasons. She is a 2011 graduate of Falmouth High School, Falmouth, MA, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, the National Math Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and president of the National Art Honor Society. She was a member of the Key Club and the French Club. Her poetry has been published in the Falmouth High School Literary Magazine. She was a participant in the 2009 Congressional Art Competition, which gives members of Congress the opportunity to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Meg has received the “No Guff” peer award. She was chosen “Miss Clipper” in her senior year, representing rigor, respect and responsibility, and received the “Student of the Month” award from the Falmouth Elks Lodge. Meg was honored by the Cape Cod Times in their 2011“Rising Stars” supplement which recognizes outstanding graduating seniors.

Meg has played junior varsity and varsity field hockey for two years, and has played varsity golf for four years. She was co-captain of the golf team, and has received the Coaches Award for Girls Golf. Meg is a four-time recipient of the award for Outstanding Academic Achievement while Participating in Athletics. She was named Athlete of the Week by the Falmouth Enterprise for her fifth place overall finish in the 2010 Mass Bay League tournament. She is an Atlantic Coast League All-Star, Boston Globe All-Star, Boston Globe All-Scholastic All-Star, and Boston Herald All-Scholastic All-Star. Meg played in the 2011 MIAA State Team Championship at Green Harbor Country Club, Marshfield, helping to bring the team to a fifth place overall finish. She went on to play in the MIAA State Individual Tournament at Crestview Country Club, Agawam.

Meghan’s community service includes volunteer work with the Falmouth Road Race, Falmouth Service Center, Relay for Life, tutor at the Falmouth Public Library, fundraising for the Battered Women’s Shelter in Falmouth, Cape Walk to End Homelessness, Volunteer in Public Schools (VIPS) at North Falmouth Elementary School, Youth Field Hockey Coach for Falmouth Field Hockey Club, St. Patrick’s Church, Falmouth, community service activities, On the Water magazine fundraiser, letter-writing campaign to overseas troops, and volunteer at a National Junior PGA Championship.

Meg works as a child care provider/babysitter, and at Dana’s Kitchen, an award-winning café, in Falmouth.

Meghan will attend the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amherst, MA, possibly majoring in education.

 

Alyssa C. Barrett

Alyssa C. Barrett, Stoughton, MA

Alyssa has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for seven seasons. She is a 2011 graduate of Notre Dame Academy, Hingham, MA, where she was a varsity member of the swim team for four years, earning a varsity letter and varsity pin. Alyssa was part of the Notre Dame Academy championship swim team in 2007 and 2008.

Alyssa was on the varsity golf team from 2008-2011, serving as captain for the past two years. In June 2011, the Notre Dame Academy girls golf team captured their tenth straight MIAA State Team Championship at Green Harbor Golf Club, Marshfield. Alyssa played in the MIAA State Individuals in 2011. She was named to the 2010 Mass Bay All-Star team, and is a recipient of the 2011 Coaches Award. She earned a varsity golf letter and pin. During the past several years, Alyssa has played in numerous NEPGA junior golf events.

Alyssa enjoys playing piano, and has been taking lessons for 13 years. She is a member of the youth ministry at St. James Church in Stoughton, where her community service includes “Mission Trip Home,” which assisted the needy in the local community, and “Mission Trip Vermont,” which provided help to the needy and elderly in the Brattleboro, Vermont, area. For three years Alyssa has participated in the food drive/hunger lock-in program, a weekend youth ministry food drive. She is also a member of the St. James Church teen choir. Alyssa has done Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger in Boston for two years, helping to raise funds that are used to provide a hot meal or a bag of groceries for hungry families across the state.

Alyssa has been a certified life guard for three years. She has worked at the Falmouth beaches since June 2009.

Alyssa will attend Saint Leo University, Saint Leo, Florida, majoring in psychology.

 

Katherine E. Britt

Katherine E. Britt, Arlington, MA

Katherine is a 2011 graduate of Arlington High School, Arlington, MA, where she was an Advanced Placement Scholar, an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction, and a member of the National Honor Society.  She has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for five seasons. She received the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, and the Award of Excellence for the Arlington High School Student Mathematics Exposition. Katherine was a three-time gold medal recipient in Spanish through the United States Achievement Academy, which recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and a commitment to academic success. She was the sole nominee to represent Arlington High School for the “MassSTAR” Citizenship Conference (MA Youth Leadership Foundation), held at Lasell College, Newton, MA, in May 2009. She attended Brown University’s Women and Leadership Summer Program in July 2009, in Providence, RI, and returned to Brown in November 2009 for their Leadership Symposium. In the same year, she attended the Mt. Holyoke College (South Hadley, MA) Take the Lead Program, a college initiative that empowers women.

Katherine was a member of the symphonic orchestra and the honors orchestra, playing first violin. She performed with the honors orchestra in the Massachusetts Music Educators Association concert in 2009. She was a member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Drama Club.

Katherine developed an outreach program entitled “PLAY” (People Leading and Assisting Youth), which she designed to assist children living in the RESPOND, Inc. domestic violence shelter and community housing in Somerville, MA. For four years she was a mentor/tutor for the Arlington elementary school chamber orchestra musicians. She has volunteered for SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving), SAVE (Students Against Violations of the Environment), Hope for Haiti, and for the Arlington Community annual Halloween “Spooky Walk” as a volunteer and performer.

Katherine was a member of the Arlington High School boys varsity golf team for four years. She was the first female team member they have had in 27 years. She served as captain her senior year, and competed in the Greater Boston League and the Dual County League.

She has worked as a junior golf instructor at Pocasset Golf Club for two years.

Katherine will attend Amherst College, Amherst, MA, majoring in biology and Spanish.

 

Chris Concannon

Christopher R. Concannon, Belmont, MA

 Chris is a 2011 graduate of Belmont High School, Belmont, MA, where he was an honor roll student. He has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for 11 seasons.

Chris was a member of the high school hockey team for three years, and played on the baseball team for four years.  He played varsity golf for three years, serving as captain and #1 player his senior year. His record of
 6-4-1 earned him a Middlesex League All-Star title. Chris has played on the Captains Golf Course Players Tour for three years.

Chris was a member of the Belmont High Community Service Club, known as the Belmontian Club. Members ran food drives and assisted at community activities such as Town Day and lighting of the town Christmas tree.

For four years, Chris was a volunteer for the Belmont Marauders Baseball Camp, an annual camp sponsored by the Brendan Grant Foundation, where youth baseball players learn the fundamentals of the game. Proceeds from the camp support the Belmont High School baseball program and the annual Brendan Grant Memorial Baseball tournament.

Chris has worked as a skate guard at the Town of Belmont hockey rink for three years. He has worked at Chequessett Yacht and Country Club, Wellfleet, for five years, starting out as cart boy and currently in the pro shop.

Chris will attend North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, majoring in Professional Golf Management.

 

Gregory A. Devico

Gregory A. DeVico, Sandwich, MA

Greg has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for eight seasons. He is a 2011 graduate of the Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, Bourne, MA, where he was enrolled in the Information Technology program. Greg was named outstanding student in Chemistry his junior year. During his senior year, he had dual enrollment in Upper Cape Tech and Cape Cod Community College, Hyannis, earning credits in academic courses that will be transferred to his college studies. Greg was on the Upper Cape Tech fall cross country team for four years, and on the spring track team for three years.

For two years, Greg has participated in the SkillsUSA Championship Competitions, in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The competition promotes leadership, teamwork, and high moral and spiritual standards. Greg has attended district competitions held at the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, and has advanced to state competitions held at the Marlboro Convention Center.

Greg has volunteered for three years at the Aqua Grille Bistro and Bar, Sandwich, MA, for the restaurant’s Oktoberfest, an event created to raise funds and public awareness of the Sandwich Emergency Heating Fund, which helps residents who need assistance heating their homes during the winter months. His community service also includes the Upper Cape Tech Craft Fair, the Sandwich Public Library, and the CAT Team (Conservation Activation Teens Team), providing community clean-up at the Green Briar Nature Center, Sandwich.

Greg has been employed by the Aqua Grille Bistro and Bar, Sandwich, for five years, as a server. He also works as a server at The Radisson Hotels and Spa, Plymouth.

Greg will attend Plymouth State University, Plymouth, NH, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Adventure Education.

 

Samuel F. Eno

Samuel F. Eno, Dennis, MA

Sam is a 2011 graduate of Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, South Yarmouth, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for six seasons.

Sam has played varsity lacrosse for four years, serving as captain his senior year, and has played high school golf for four years, three years on varsity and captain his senior year. He has also participated in youth hockey and middle school tennis programs. He has competed in AJGA, MGA Junior Amateur, and United States Challenge Cup Junior Golf championships.

Sam was a delegate at the Stay in the Game Leadership Conference, held at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA, sponsored by the Executive Office of Public Safety and the MIAA, where he and other students attended sessions addressing contemporary issues that impact a young person in today’s world. Participants learn how to set good examples and be a positive influence among their peers.

Sam’s community service includes his membership in the Youth Ministry of St. Pius X Church, South Yarmouth, where he has helped plan events for fundraising for Relay for Life, and helped with social events for younger church members.

Sam has worked as a caddy at Cape Cod National, Brewster, and Hyannisport Club, Hyannis Port. He has been employed at The Mercantile, Inc., Dennis, and currently works at the Marshside Restaurant, East Dennis.

Sam will attend Le Moyne College, Syracuse, NY, majoring in accounting.

 

 

Shannon Fiske

Shannon S. Fiske, Walpole, MA

Shannon has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for five seasons. She is a 2011 graduate of Fontbonne Academy, Milton, where she was a member of the student council.

Shannon played varsity volleyball for three years, serving as captain her junior year. She was senior captain of the indoor track team, and competed in the shot put event for four years. She played in the MIAA Girls State Individual Indoor Track and Field Championship at Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Boston, for two years, finishing 6th in the state in the shot put event in 2011. She played varsity golf for four years, and was captain her senior year. Her team played in the MIAA Girls State Team Golf Championship for two years, placing 9th overall in 2011.

Shannon has logged over 100 hours of community service at Fontbonne Academy, including leading open house tours of the school and mentoring freshmen. She has worked as a camp councilor at Camp U.S.A. in Pocasset for two summers, teaching adolescents about the history of the government and the political system of the country. She helped to develop and implement activities for the children. Through St. Mary’s Church, East Walpole, Shannon has volunteered at The Pine Street Inn, which serves meals and provides emergency and transitional shelter to homeless men and women.

She has worked at West Falmouth Market, West Falmouth, for two years.

Shannon will attend Fordham University, New York, NY, majoring in history.

 

Patrick F. Gilligan, Jr.

Patrick F. Gilligan, Jr., Acton, MA

Patrick has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for three seasons. He is a 2011 graduate of Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, where he was an honor roll student.  He is a 2011 recipient of the Gold Presidential Community Service Award, for performing over 250 hours of community service over a 12-month period. The reward recognizes individuals who have achieved a certain standard by making time for neighbors and communities, measured by the number of hours served in a 12-month period. The award includes a gold pin with the presidential seal, a presidential certificate, and a letter from President Obama. Patrick is a board member of the Acton-Boxborough Student Activity Fund, an organization that raises one hundred thousand dollars annually for Acton-Boxborough High School student activities. He has completed the Mentors in Violence program, a gender violence prevention and education program based at Northeastern University, Boston, in which teacher-selected students develop leadership skills as empowered bystanders who can urge others to avoid violence and treat all people with respect. He is a three-year recipient of the Acton-Boxborough Community Service Award.

Patrick has played high school football, lacrosse and basketball, and was a member of the West Dennis Yacht Club sailing team.

Patrick was a peer mentor for freshman algebra students. He has made mission trips with the South Acton Congregational Church to Neon, Kentucky, helping with the demolition of a home damaged by fire, and to Atlanta, Georgia, where he worked in a soup kitchen and painted the interior of a home. He has volunteered for Relay for Life, Crop Walk, raising funds for the hungry, and Lazarus House, a local food pantry. Patrick has been a coach for the Acton-Boxborough Town Teams, organizing and coaching basketball and baseball teams comprised of his peers, as well as teams of 5th and 6th graders. This summer, he is volunteering for the Household Goods Recycling Ministries, a non-profit organization that provides needy families with furniture and other household goods.       

Patrick has worked as an umpire in the Acton-Boxborough Youth Baseball League, and as a referee in the Acton-Boxborough Community Education Basketball League. He is employed at Savory Lane, a café in West Acton, and at Ardeo’s Mediterranean Taverna, in South Yarmouth.

He will attend Bates College, Lewiston, Maine, majoring in pre-med. He will play on the football team.  

 

Benjamin A. Gless

Benjamin A. Gless, Dennis Port, MA

Ben is a graduate of Chatham High School, Chatham. He has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for three seasons.  

Ben played varsity basketball for three years, and baseball for two years. He was a member of the high school golf team for four years, serving as the team captain his senior year.

Ben tied for first in the Mayflower League Golf Tournament, and came in second in the Nantucket Invitational. He has participated in PGA Junior Callaway events, earning two first place finishes. He has made the cut in two United States Challenge Cup events, finishing 30th and 38th.

Ben’s community service includes heading the organization of a fundraiser for the Harwich homeless shelter. For three years, he has volunteered his time at Dennis Highlands for The First Tee, a program that provides educational opportunities for young people that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

Ben has worked as a busboy at Jake Rooney’s Restaurant, Harwich, and as a caddie at Cape Cod National, Brewster. He is currently employed as a part-time field surveyor for Existing Grade, Inc., Dennis Port, and as a pro shop associate at The Captains Golf Course, Brewster.

Ben will attend Cape Cod Community College, West Barnstable,   MA, majoring in sports management and business.

 

Jared E. Hoffman

Jared E. Hoffman, Laguna Beach, CA

Jared has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for three seasons. He is a 2011 graduate of Sage Hill School, Newport Coast, California, where he was a high honor roll student, graduating with a cumulative GPA of 4.32. He is the recipient of the Sage Hill School Community Award, given to one senior who exemplifies the value of community. Jared was elected junior class co-chair of the student council, and was elected student body president his senior year.

Jared played on the varsity golf team for four years, and was captain his senior year. He was named an All-Academy League Golfer for three years.

Jared tutored Algebra II students at Laguna Beach High School. He  co-founded and is Chief Financial Officer of Microgifts, an officially recognized non-profit organization (501(c) 3) designed to help generate and facilitate the simple and efficient distribution of small charitable donations. It was established with the intention to transition charitable giving to the mobile sector. He designed and created the Microgifts website, www.microgifts.org. He helped build the Microgifts iPhone Application, which allows iPhone users to donate to charities through their smart-phone. Jared has partnered with charities including The V Foundation for Cancer Research, Partners in Health, Junior Diabetes Research Foundation, and the Freedom Writers Foundation.

Jared is employed at The Country Club at New Seabury, Mashpee, as a range attendant. He co-manages the Microgifts organization.

Jared will attend Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. His major is currently undeclared.

 


Andrew L. Kelly

Andrew L. Kelly, Falmouth, MA

Andrew is a 2011 graduate of Falmouth High School, Falmouth, MA. He has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for four seasons. He was a delegate at the Stay in the Game Leadership Conference, held at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA, sponsored by the Executive Office of Public Safety and the MIAA, where he and other students attended sessions addressing contemporary issues that impact a young person in today’s world. Participants learn how to set a good example and be a positive influence among their peers.

Andrew was a member of the golf team, serving as captain his senior year. He is a recipient of the Coaches Award for Golf, and was named an Atlantic Coast League All-Star. In his junior year, he posted a 78 at the MIAA Eastern Massachusetts Sectionals.

Andrew was captain of the hockey team, as well as top goal scorer during the 2010-2011 season. He was lead returning scorer in his junior year. In 2008 he led his team to win the title of Atlantic Coast League Champions. He was a member of the Cape Cod Whalers Massachusetts
Tier II Midgets summer/fall league, an organization which helps promote respect, courtesy, and good sportsmanship among all teams, players, coaches, parents and fans.

He was captain of the baseball team his senior year, playing first base and infield. He received the Coaches Award for Baseball his freshman and senior years.

Andrew’s volunteer service includes Relay for Life for four years, the 2010 American Junior Golf Association tournament at The Golf Club of Cape Cod, East Falmouth, and the Falmouth Service Center.

Andrew has been employed by Ghelfi’s Candies of Cape Cod, Falmouth, for four years, and has been a caddy at Woods Hole Country Club, MA, for six years.

Andrew will attend Coastal Carolina University, Conway, South Carolina, majoring in sports management.

 

Kevin P. Robinson

Kevin P. Robinson, North Falmouth, MA

Kevin is a 2011 graduate of Falmouth High School, Falmouth. He has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for three seasons. He was a member of the Key Club, and recipient of the No Guff Award.
“No Guff” is a Falmouth High School initiative that supports zero tolerance of bullying or harassment.

Kevin’s community service includes volunteering for the Walk for the Homeless and for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. He coached 8th graders for the Falmouth Recreation Department’s Youth Basketball League and taught 4th grade religious education classes at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, North Falmouth.

Kevin played high school basketball for two years, and received the Coaches Award for Basketball each year. He has played high school golf for four years, and has been on the varsity team for three years. He played in the 2010 MIAA State Team Golf Sectionals at Marshfield Country Club, Marshfield. He is a recipient of the Coaches Award for golf.

Kevin has worked at Pocasset Golf Club, Pocasset, for the past two years, as a grounds and maintenance technician. He is also employed by the Cape Cod Stuffed Quahog Company, Monument Beach, where he has worked as a production assistant and production leader for four years.

Kevin will attend Cape Cod Community College, West Barnstable, MA, majoring in business.

 

Mary C. Robinson

Mary C. Robinson, North Falmouth, MA

Mary Kate has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for four seasons. She is a 2011 graduate of Falmouth High School, Falmouth, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the Mathematics Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta. She received recognition for excellence in Spanish. Mary Kate was a member of the Psychology Outreach Program, mentoring high school students, and of People to People International, promoting international understanding and friendships through educational, cultural and humanitarian activities. She was a member of the Key Club.

Mary Kate played varsity basketball for two years. She has been a member of the Falmouth High School varsity golf team for four years, and has been the team’s co-captain and #1 player for the past two years. Mary Kate played in the MIAA Girls State Individual Championship for the past three years, as well as in the MIAA Girls Team Championship for three years, leading the Falmouth Clippers to a fifth-place finish this year at Green Harbor Golf Club, Marshfield. She was named an Atlantic Coast League Golf All-Star for three years, and has received the ACL Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for Golf for the past two years. Mary Kate is a Boston Herald and Boston Globe All-Scholastic, as well as recipient of the Coaches Award for golf. She was named Athlete of the Week by the Falmouth Enterprise for her fourth place finish in the 2010 Mass Bay League tournament, and was featured in 2011 by the Falmouth Enterprise in an interview in “Outside the Lines.”

Mary Kate’s community service includes Habitat for Humanity, Falmouth Road Race, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Falmouth Recreation Youth Soccer coach, mentor for Morse Pond School’s 5th and 6th grade after-school golf program, and junior high and high school math tutor.

Mary Kate has worked at the Cape Cod Stuffed Quahog Company, Monument Beach, for three years. She is also employed at Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium, Falmouth, and Paul Harney Golf Course, teaching in the junior program.

Mary Kate will attend Syracuse University, NY. Her major is currently undeclared.

 

Phillip S. Walker

Phillip S. Walker, Medway, MA

Phil is a 2011 graduate of Medway High School, Medway, where he was an active member of the student council for three years. He has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for seven seasons. For three years he was a participant in the Medway High School Science Olympiad, a premiere science competition providing standards-based challenges to teams of students with an emphasis on teamwork and cooperative learning strategies.

Phil played on the varsity soccer team for four years. He was on the varsity lacrosse team for four years, and also played high school basketball. Phil was a member of the Franconia Ski Club ski racing team throughout high school, and was named most improved ski racer. He received the Ski Ward Race Team Coaches Award, and the Medway Cup Sportsmanship Award.

For three years, Phil has been a coach for the Medway Youth Lacrosse program. He was a member of the high school youth ministry at St. Joseph’s Parish, Medway, where his community service includes volunteering at church activities, the walk for the poor, and the church fair.

Phil has worked for Michael J. Cotton Building and Remodeling. He is currently employed as a Tommy Hilfiger sales associate at Wrentham Village Premium Outlets, Wrentham.

Phil will attend the University of Maine at Orono, ME, majoring in accounting and marketing.
