CCPGA JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

2010 Recipients recieve $500 scholarships from Junior Golf Director John Flynn and Kevan Evangelista, PGA, Cape Cod Junior Golf Chairman

Amanda Condon

Amanda G. Condon, Sandwich, MA

Amanda has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for eleven seasons, the third of four children in her family to have played on the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association tour. She is a 2010 graduate of Sandwich High School, Sandwich, MA, where she was secretary of her class and vice-president of the National Honor Society. As a member of the Key Club, she volunteered for the New England Organ Bank, giving presentations to inform other students of the importance of organ donation. She has been a Relay for Life participant. Amanda was a member of the Ecology Club, volunteering at Greenbrier Nature Center, East Sandwich, to care for, measure the growth of, and release endangered Red Belly Turtles.

Amanda was a member of the Sandwich High School swim team for four years, and was captain her senior year. She and fellow student and Cape Cod Junior Golf Association member Jackie Mantenfel were instrumental in organizing the Sandwich Girls Golf Club, which played and practiced at The Ridge Club in Sandwich. Amanda was a member of the Model United Nations Club for four years. Participants research a country, and, in the roll of diplomat, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.

Amanda was selected to attend Massachusetts Girls State, which is a program that teaches young women responsible citizenship and love of God and Country. Participants study local and state government, and are selected based on their interest in government and current events, have high moral character, strong leadership abilities, and above average scholarship standing. Amanda is the recipient of the Samsung American Legion Scholarship, recognizing her as the outstanding delegate of the 2009 Massachusetts Girls State program. She is also the recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution/Cape and Islands Chapter Good Citizens Award.

Amanda is a certified life guard and water safety instructor. She has worked as a life guard and swim instructor at the Sandwich Community School pool for the past four years.

Amanda will attend the University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH, with a possible double major in environmental conservation studies with a focus in public policy, and international affairs.

 

Ben Tucker

Benjamin J. Tucker, East Falmouth, MA

Ben has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for three seasons. He is a 2010 graduate of Falmouth High School, Falmouth, MA, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He received Recognition for Outstanding Performance as a Three-season Athlete for three years. He was a member of the Key Club and the Portuguese Club.

Throughout his four years in high school, Ben played junior varsity and varsity hockey, lacrosse, and golf.

Ben’s community service includes Relay for Life, Barnstable County Fair parking attendant, and Cape Cod Air Show parking attendant. He also volunteered for the Police Athletic League (PAL) after-school program, which brings police, children and other community members together to take part in sports and other activities.

Ben has been employed as a cashier at Windfall Market, Falmouth, and as a dock manager for the Island Queen Ferry Service, Falmouth. He currently works as kitchen help at the Boathouse Restaurant and Lounge, Falmouth. He owns and operates Tucker Landscaping.

Ben will attend the University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH, with a possible major in communication.

 

Ross Nicholson

Ross J. Nicholson, Winchester, MA

Ross has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for five seasons. He is a 2010 graduate of Winchester High School, Winchester, MA, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He was a member of the Spanish Club for two years, and co-president his senior year.

Ross played varsity golf for four years, leading his team as captain and number one player his senior year. His record of 6-3-2 earned him a Middlesex League All-Star title. He finished fifth in the 2009 Massachusetts Division 2 State Individual Tournament, shooting a 76, and finished fourth in the Division 2 North Sectional Tournament, shooting a 73. Ross has also competed in Varsity Winter Track since sophomore year, running the mile.

Ross has been a member of two high school musical groups for two years. The Octets and The Chamber Singers are select A Cappella vocal ensembles whose membership is open by audition only. As a member of the 2010 All-State Chorus, Ross participated in the Massachusetts All-State Music Festival, which was held at Symphony Hall, Boston, MA.

Ross has taught religious education classes to fifth graders at St. Mary’s Parish in Winchester for two years. Since 2008, he has been a summer volunteer for the Pan-Mass Challenge, an annual bike-a-thon where thousands of people bike 192 miles to raise millions of dollars for cancer care and research through the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund.

Ross will attend Colgate University, Hamilton, NY, majoring in math/economics. He plans to play Division 1 golf in the Patriot League.

 

David P. Mykrantz, Wellesley, MA  (no photo avail)

David has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for four seasons. He is a 2010 graduate of Wellesley High School, where he was an honor roll student, and a member of the Spanish Club.

David played in three varsity sports while in high school. He was captain of the tennis team, leading Wellesley High School to win the 2010 Massachusetts State Tennis Team championship title. He was named MVP of the high school basketball team his senior year. He was a member of the golf team during his junior and senior years. His team won the 2010 Bay State League golf title. David also participated in the Wellesley Youth Soccer program, and was a member of the high school soccer team.
David is a member of the Wellesley Congregational Church Youth Group, where he participated in numerous outreach programs, including serving meals at homeless shelters and visiting the elderly at nursing homes and retirement facilities.

David has been employed by Willowbend Country Club as a tennis instructor and hitting partner, and is currently working as wait staff at West Beach Club, Hyannis Port.

David will attend Loyola University, Baltimore, MD, majoring in business.

 

Aneesha Mehta

Aneesha Mehta, Wellesley, M

Aneesha has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for six seasons.  She is a 2010 graduate of Milton Academy, Milton, MA, where she was a member of the Cum Laude Society.

Aneesha is the recipient of the Wales Prize for her achievement in physics, the Persky Award for the best 2009-2010 news article in a Milton Academy publication, and the Milton Academy Art Prize for her accomplishments in photography. She and a team of her peers won first place in a Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) competition, and also received national recognition.

Aneesha has played field hockey throughout high school, and was JV captain her junior year. She has played varsity golf since sophomore year. She has been the Ridge Club Junior Champion for six consecutive years. She has participated in the Steve Darling Strength and Conditioning Program at Milton Academy for the past three winter seasons.

In 2008, Aneesha had an internship with the HR department at Mercer, a global leader for HR and related financial advice products and services. She worked with a team of people that were outsourcing a branch of the company to India. In 2009, she worked in the Zon Lab, a genetics lab at Harvard Medical School, helping a graduate student make progress on a chemical screen. This summer, Aneesha traveled to India to work for a startup company that delivers health information via telephone.

Aneesha has taken three years of photography classes, was yearbook photography editor, and has had an exhibit of her work at Milton Academy. She was co-editor-in-chief of the school’s student-run newspaper for four years, a peer tutor in physics, a school tour guide, and a Spanish exchange student, staying with a family in Madrid for one month. She has written for La Voz, Milton’s Spanish student literary magazine, and for The Heartbeat, the school’s World Health Organization newsletter.

For three years, Aneesha has been a weekly volunteer at The Randolph Preschool. This summer, she is helping to teach science classes at the Massachusetts Audubon Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary in Barnstable.

In Spring 2010, Aneesha completed an independent scientific research project involving the study of the development of zebrafish embryos and the effects that several variables had on their growth. She also produced a video of normal zebrafish development. In May, for her student independent project, Aneesha studied natural treatments and healers, such as acupuncture, aroma therapy, nutrition, yoga, and meditation through interviews, papers, classes, herbal walks and related activities.

Cam Dennis

Cameron W. Dennis, Cotuit, MA

Cam has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for six seasons. He is a 2010 graduate of Barnstable High School, Barnstable, MA, where he was an honor roll student. He played on the golf team his freshman year, and was on the tennis team throughout high school, playing varsity tennis for the past three years. Cam participated in the Mashpee Elite Tennis program from 2003-2010.

Cam attended the Waquoit Bay Science Academy, studying marine biology. He has his PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) scuba diving certification, as well as his ServeSafe Certification, which provides food safety training, information, tools, and resources for people working in the food industry. Cam has been a member of the Cape Cod Synagogue Capty Group for ten years. His participation with the Capty Group includes manning a table to sell items made by women who were victims of violence, making Sunday meals for the NOAH shelter in Hyannis, carving turkeys for dinners provided by the Salvation Army at Christmastime, and doing yard work for the elderly.

Cam volunteered with the Amazon Rain Forest Mission, traveling to Ecuador to deliver supplies to a remote village. He has been involved with the Sandy Neck Beach Junior Ranger program, the Safe Harbor and NOAH Shelter Community Action Group, and the Enoch Cobb Math/Science Academy Massachusetts State Turtle Release Program.

Cam has worked as a caddy at Wianno Golf Club, Osterville, as a tennis court maintenance assistant at Willowbend Golf Resort, Mashpee, and as a busboy at Spanky’s Clam Shack, Hyannis. In his spare time he enjoys skiing, boating, scuba diving and playing golf.

Cam will attend the University of New Hampshire, Manchester, majoring in mechanical engineering.

 

 

Michael T. Devlin, Chestnut Hill, MA  (no picture available)

Michael has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for eleven seasons. He is a 2010 graduate of Brookline High School, Brookline, MA, where he was an honor roll student. Michael was the vice-president and founding member of the Economics/Investment Club, and a member of the Junior Mentor Program, for which he was chosen among the leaders of the senior class to mentor incoming freshmen. Michael played basketball with the Brookline Recreational League for three years. He played junior varsity and varsity baseball for Brookline High School, earned two letters, and was captain his senior year.

Michael played on the golf team throughout high school, earned four letters, was MVP his junior and senior year, was named All-Scholastic, Bay State All-Star, South Sectional Medalist, and was co-captain his senior year. In 2009, Michael tied for 15th at the AJGA National Qualifier at Penn State, qualified for Men’s Massachusetts Publinks, placed in the top twenty in the Junior PGA Regional Championship, and was the Dennis Pines Junior Club Champion. He was the 2006 Cape Cod Junior Golf Association player of the year in his division.

Michael’s community service includes assisting at senior community activities at St. Ignatius Church, Brookline, and volunteering for the Special Olympics.

Michael has been employed at the Scargo Café, Dennis, as host and bus boy, and at The Country Club, Brookline, as a caddy, for the past two summers.

Michael will attend the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC, majoring in business.

 

Will Gotschewski

William P. Gotschewski, Wellesley, MA

Will has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for four seasons. He is a 2010 graduate of Wellesley High School, where he was an honor roll student.

Will was a member of the high school golf team for three years.
He was named Wellesley High School’s Most Improved Golfer his junior year, and was the 2009 Cape Cod Junior Golf Association player of the year. The Wellesley High School golf team won the Bay State League title in 2010.

During his senior year, Will won the Division 2 South Sectionals, shooting 72. He went on to finish ninth in the state finals, shooting 79. He was a 2010 Boston Herald All-Scholastic, and was voted MVP of the Wellesley High School golf team.

As a member of the St. Paul Parish in Wellesley, Will volunteered in selected activities to support the local food pantry. His community service also included working at a Super Bowl Sunday fund raiser to benefit a local shelter.

Will has worked as a basketball referee for the Wellesley Recreation Department for the past four years. This summer, he is working at The Captains Golf Course with the cart and driving range staff.

Will has chosen to attend High Point University, High Point, NC, majoring in business.

 

Matt Guresh

Matthew P. Guresh, Falmouth, MA

Matt has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for four seasons.  He is a 2010 graduate of Bishop Stang High School, North Dartmouth, MA, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He achieved the degree of Summa Cum Laude on the 2007 National Latin Exam, and was the recipient of the 2008 Theology Academic Award.

Matt was a varsity member of the Forensics and Debate Team for two years, and a member of the Pro-Life Club and the Campus Ministry. Throughout high school he has participated in football, basketball and weightlifting, as well as junior varsity and varsity baseball. He played on the varsity golf team for three years.

Matt’s community service includes work at the Physical Therapy Clinic at South Coast Hospital, North Dartmouth, where he assisted athletic trainers and physical therapists in the sports medicine program. He volunteered through the Bishop Stang F.I.A.T. (Faith In Action Together) program, in which teachers and students organize and participate in food drives, social concern walks, a homelessness project, support for Mission Honduras, a backpack program for needy children, and a service retreat that provides minor repairs, painting and yard work for the poor and needy of the New Bedford area. As a communicant of St. Elizabeth Seton Church in North Falmouth, Matt was a member of the parish Teen Club, prepared Thanksgiving dinners for the needy in the community, and was an altar server.

Matt has worked at the Fishmonger Café in Woods Hole, has umpired for the Falmouth Little League baseball program, and has served ice cream at Jimmy’s Ice Cream Parlor, Woods Hole. He is currently working as wait staff at the Casino Wharf FX, Falmouth Heights.

Matt will attend Franklin Pierce University, Rindge, NH, majoring in biology and physical therapy with a concentration in medicine.

 

Ron Hewins

Ronald W. Hewins, Sandwich, MA

Ron has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for eight seasons. He is a 2010 graduate of Sandwich High School, Sandwich, MA. He has been involved in the sport of golf for most of his life. He played varsity golf throughout high school. In 2006, the Sandwich High School golf team was a South Sectional finalist, and in 2009, the team placed second in States.

For several years, Ron has volunteered with the Town of Yarmouth Recreation Department as a summer junior golf clinic assistant. He has also worked as an assistant ‘keeper’ at Race Point Light Station on Cape Cod, which is cared for and preserved by volunteers of the Cape Cod Chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation. The ‘keepers’ host guests at the historic site, and ensure that the guests understand the importance of protecting the natural environment surrounding Race Point Light Station.

Ron has worked as a caddy at the Ridge Club, Sandwich, and is currently working there with the greens keeper in maintenance. He also works at the Barnstable Restaurant and Tavern, Barnstable.

Ron will be attending The Stockbridge School at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, pursuing an Associates degree in Turf Management, and a Bachelors degree in business.

 


Tyler Kelly

J. Tyler Kelly, Cotuit, MA

Tyler has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for four seasons. He is a 2010 graduate of Barnstable High School. Tyler was a member of the high school golf team. He participated in the Hyannis Minor and Major League baseball league for many years. He was a member of the Cape Cod rowing team for two years, and played basketball with the Barnstable Recreation league.

Tyler worked on B2btv at Barnstable High School, producing videos and appearing in some episodes as a news anchor. Through the youth ministry at Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville, he assisted children with their Christmas shopping at the church during the holiday season. Tyler also volunteered for the Red Cross, providing supplies and blankets to people who were recovering from loss due to fires.

Tyler has been employed at Shaw’s Star Market, Hyannis, as a cashier and clerk for two years.

Tyler will attend the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, majoring in digital media, with a concentration in animation and illustration.

 

Tyler LaBonte

Tyler D. LaBonte, Brewster, MA

Tyler has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for three seasons. He is a 2010 graduate of Nauset Regional High School. He was a member of the concert band, playing trumpet, trombone and baritone. He was a participant in Destination Imagination for eight years. His team won the regional tournament and finished in the top ten in the state four consecutive years. Tyler has played on the Nauset golf team throughout high school, playing varsity for three years and serving as captain his senior year. The Nauset golf team finished second in the States in 2008. Tyler was named 2010 Cape Cod Junior Golf Association player of the year in his division.

Tyler has been a member of the Boy Scouts of America since 1998.
Earlier this year, he successfully completed an Eagle Scout board of review and attained Eagle Scout rank. Tyler’s Eagle Scout project was to build an orienteering course between the Stony Brook Elementary School and the Eddy Elementary School. He developed a lesson plan, designed a map, and donated compasses to use on the course.

 He assisted other scouts with their Eagle Scout projects, including constructing and installing Eastern Bluebird boxes on seven sites in Brewster with the approval of the Cape Cod Bird Club, constructing 110 Screech Owl boxes for Wild Care in Eastham, and tearing down and rebuilding dugouts at Gage’s Field in Brewster. He was a troop guide, helping younger scouts through rank advancement. He was involved in numerous community service projects, including organizing a book sale for the Brewster Ladies Library.

Tyler has worked for Cape Cod Cleaning Services and Linen Rentals. He was on the kitchen staff at the Cape Cod Sea Camps, Brewster, a coed summer camp with residential and day camp programs. He is currently employed at The Captains Golf Course, Brewster, working as a shop attendant, on the range, and in the cart barn.

Tyler will attend Westfield State College, Westfield, MA, majoring in political science and economics.

 

John Tassinari

Jacquelyn E. Mantenfel, Sandwich, MA

Jackie has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for eleven seasons. She is a 2010 graduate of Sandwich High School, Sandwich, MA, where she was a member of the National Honor Society.

Jackie maintained a four-year membership in many clubs and organizations throughout high school. She was president of the Student Ecology Club, where she organized and directed a school-wide paper collection and recycling program. Jackie was a peer mediator and a member of the student council. She was a member of the Model United Nations Club, in which participants research a country, and, in the roll of diplomat, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. For the past two years, Jackie has been a member of the Knights Theater Company, working as tech crew, stage manager and vice-president, organizing and assisting behind the scenes to put on high school performances and shows. She was a member of the Math Team.

Jackie and fellow student and Cape Cod Junior Golf Association member Amanda Condon were instrumental in organizing the Sandwich Girls Golf Club, in which they played and practiced at the Ridge Club in Sandwich. She is a member of the Junior LPGA.

Jackie is the recipient of the Silver Scholar Award, the Student Council Member Excellence Award, the School Council Award, the Golden Jigsaw Award for KTC tech crew, and was named the 2004 Cape Cod Junior Golf Association player of the year for her division.

Jackie’s community service includes volunteer work with the 2008 International Coastal Cleanup, the Annual Gerald DeConto Race, We Gather Together Race, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and the Greenbrier Nature Center, East Sandwich, where she assisted with the care, measurement and release of endangered Red Belly Turtles.

Jackie has worked at the Dunbar Tea Shop. She currently works as a diet aide at the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Cape and Islands, Sandwich.

Jackie will attend the University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT, majoring in chemistry.

 

Tyler McGrail

R. Tyler McGrail, Wakefield, MA

Tyler has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for five years. He is a 2010 graduate of Wakefield Memorial High School, Wakefield, MA, where he was a member of the National Honor Society.

Tyler played freshman basketball and varsity football and baseball. He was a two-time Northeast League All-Star with the Northeast Baseball Summer League, playing on the Wakefield Townies Team. He was selected to play in the Blue-Grey Classic Massachusetts All-Star baseball game, and was named to the All-New England team. Tyler is the 2009 recipient of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Student/Athlete Citizenship Award, one of two male student/athletes chosen to represent Wakefield High School in recognition of excellence in academics, athletics and citizenship.

Tyler’s community service includes Relay for Life, participating as a team member of “Wood’s Warriors” in memory of Ron Woods, a former football coach at Wakefield High School. Tyler coached Babe Ruth baseball, and was a coach in the Wakefield Basketball Association. In 2008, he coached the eighth grade Wakefield travel basketball team to a second place finish in the Massachusetts Invitational State Championship.  

Tyler’s work experience includes paralegal work at the Law Offices of Brian D. McGrail, and providing tech support for small business computer and wireless communication systems on a fee-for-service basis.

Tyler will attend Tufts University School of Arts and Sciences, Medford, MA. He is interested in the fields of political science, economics, and business. Tyler was recruited to be a member of the Tufts University baseball team. He will be playing in the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

 

Connor Megan
Connor J. Megan
, East Falmouth, MA

Connor has been a member of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association for three seasons.  He is a 2010 graduate of Falmouth High School, Falmouth, MA, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the Key Club.

Connor played junior varsity and varsity golf, hockey and baseball. He was co-captain of the hockey team and captain of the golf team. In 2008 and 2009, Connor was named a Boys Golf ACL All-Star and Boston Globe All-Star. He is a recipient of the 2010 Gary Philbrick Memorial Scholarship.

As a member of St. Anthony’s Church, East Falmouth, Connor volunteered at the church’s summer fair.

Connor’s community service includes Relay for Life, and volunteering for the Falmouth Public Library’s Children’s Summer Fest. With other members of the Falmouth High School National Honor Society, Connor assisted with renovations at the Falmouth Teen Center, and provided child care during PTO meetings at the Teaticket Elementary School.

Connor is working at the Cape Cod Country Club and at the Woods Hole Country Club as a cart attendant.

Connor will attend Clemson University, Greenville, SC, pursuing a double major in Professional Golf Management and business.
