Cape Cod PGA Junior Golf Background:
In 1993, a group of golfers, parents, and PGA professionals saw a need on Cape Cod for an organized golf program for junior golfers. The Cape Cod Junior Golf Association, under the auspices of the Cape Cod Chapter NEPGA, was created to give children from the ages of 8 to 18 an opportunity to play affordable golf on Cape Cod courses with other children their own age. Among others who helped to launch the CCJGA program eighteen years ago are Bob Chase, John Flynn, Mike Robichaud, and Sue and Keith Lewis. Because of its affiliation with the PGA, the association benefits from working with pros like Tony Day and Kevan Evangelista, who are the PGA representatives for
Tour 2010, and Mark O'Brien, PGA president of the Cape Cod Chapter NEPGA. The daily operations of the CCJGA are run by directors John and Peg Flynn. John has been running the program for eighteen years. Peg has been with the association for eight years.
OurMission:
The mission of the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association is to instill in our members a sense of sportsmanship, an appreciation of fair and honest competition, and an attitude of courtesy and respect for tournament officials, club members, spectators, and fellow golfers.
Program Details:
The CCJGA Summer Tour runs from June to August. Members must be a resident of Cape Cod. Only members of the CCJGA are eligible to participate in the tournaments. Membership is limited to 350 children. Details regarding membership can be obtained from the CCJGA office during the month of February. The membership roster is finalized during the month of March.
Twelve events are run per season, with divisions for beginners and players. First year members and their parent or guardian must attend a mandatory rules and etiquette clinic held by the association prior to the first event. A typical tournament will find 60 beginners participating in a clinic while 140 players are out on the course. The sponsoring clubs support the Cape Cod Junior Golf Association by generously donating the course time for the tournaments. In August, the CCJGA presents scholarships to the graduating seniors who have been members of the association for three or more years. |
