Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Pro-3-Am
Best Ball Gross and Net
at the Golf Club of Cape Cod
6,380 yards, Par 72

NORTH FALMOUTH – Greg Yeomans and his amateur team were the first to finish the Cape Cod Chapter of the New England PGA Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Pro-Am.
Little did they know that Yeomans’ 1-over-par-73 effort over the 6,400-yard Golf Club of Cape Cod layout would be the low score of the day from among the 22-team field.

When he left the clubhouse, Yeomans said “That won’t be near the top. You don’t want to talk to me about how I played.”

One thing that may have soured Yeomans mood at the time was a double-bogey 6 on the 17th hole that prevented him from a sub-par round.

That’s about the only thing the Bay Club director of golf got wrong that day. His 73 was one stroke better than a trio of players that included Andy Fisher of The Country Club, Rusty Gunnarson of Rochester Golf Club and Ballymeade’s Craig Garris.

Garris muffed his chance to tie for the top spot when he bogeyed the 17th hole. Despite that miscue Garris managed a 1-under 35 on the back to offset a front-9 37.

Yeomans used his knowledge of the two-year-old, Rees Jones-designed layout to notch his win and further solidify his lead in the Wessner Points standings to determine the Chapter’s top player. Yeomans won the Wessner crown for the first time in 2009 and is looking to become the first back-to-back winner since Mike Ghelfi of Hyannis Golf Club accomplished that feat in 2003-2004.
“I’m pretty familiar with the course,” Yeomans said. “I’ve had success at different events here and I’ve learned some of the course’s nuances. I only hit driver twice and, because I’ve been here, I was pretty conservative in my approach because I know how you can get in trouble.

“This is a course that doesn’t sit well with my eye, so rather than attack it, I try to manage my way around it not making costly mistakes,” Yeomans added.”This is one of the more demanding layouts we play.”

Yeomans card was impressive with five 3’s and a 2 on the day, however, two bogeys and the double on 17 dimmed what could have been a brilliant day.

As for Fisher, who was playing in his second CCNEPGA event, The Country Club assistant pro got off to a hot start that included an eagle-3 on No. 3 and a birdie on No. 6 to complete the front nine in 3-un der-par.

He struggled on the back with four bogeys, a double on 17 and a birdie to finish at 2-over-par.
Gunnarson was the only player of the top four to par the difficult 17th hole, but bogeying four of the last seven holes led to his second-place finish.

“I just lost it on the putting green,” Gunnarson said. “I really like this course and I felt like I had a chance to do something after going 2-under after 11 holes, but then the putts stopped falling.”
Yeomans now has a 23 point lead over Ghelfi in the Wessner race. Gunnarson, the 2007 winner, is in third, 5 points behind Ghelfi, and two-time winner Tom Tobey of Bay Pointe, who finished alone in fifth at The Golf Club of Cape Cod with a 75, is in fourth place in the Wessner Standings.
In team play, Ghelfi and his amateur team of John Silvia IV, Whitney Trimble and Dana Savoie cruised to the win in the net division with a 57 while host pro Doug Errhalt and his team of Fred Jewett, Eric Roberts, and Charlie Passios took the honor with a 66.

Next up on the Chapter schedule is the popular Pro-Senior Championship, Thursday, Sept. 23 at Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds.      complete results
