OLD SANDWICH’S DOHERTY & DUNHAM CAPTURE PRO-1AM

Besting a talented field of 16 teams by three shots, the Old Sandwich GC duo of Asst. Professional Chris Doherty and former NHL standout goalie Mike Dunham fired a 4-under par 68 at Farm Neck GC in winning this years’ Cape Cod PGA Pro-1Am championship.

Chris Doherty

Just three other teams shot par or better on a cool, blustery day where birdies were precious and bogeys were easy to record.  Finishing second with a team score of 71, Hyannis GC’s PGA Director of Teaching David Donnellan along with Mike Kelly (Mission Hills, CA) managed to sneak ahead of the pair of teams who came home on level par.  Doherty’s boss, Jay Wick along with his partner and longtime Cape Cod amateur star Mike Marooney were at par with Sandwich Hollows’ Jesse Schechtman and his partner Peter Hartmann whose driving was commendable all day.

3rd hole

Rounding out the money winners were three teams who shot +1  73’s for the day in this best-ball of two gross score event.

Many thanks to the outstanding Farm Neck golf staff:  PGA Head Professional Mike Zoll, and his able PGA assistants , Kyle Fiore, Don Costello and Tara Silva – all of whom made the 32 intrepid traveling golfers feel extremely welcome to their island.

15th hole

A total of 7 skins were recorded for the day:  all worth $90 each -  Mike Haberl (#2 & #4),  Donellan (#6), Wick (#8),  Doherty (#10 & #15) & Sean Edmonds (#18)

Sean Edmunds

The Cape Cod PGA will gather again in June for two superb tournaments:  the PRO-PRO championship scheduled for June 12th at Willowbend and then the popular PRO-LADY scheduled for June 21st at White Cliffs.  Hope to see you all there!

THE AGELESS ONE ACES POCASSET’S 6TH ….BUT WICK’S 69 STEALS THE SHOW

Pocasset, MA
May 3, 2012

On a cloudy, windless day at the venerable Pocasset GC  links 59-yr old Rusty Gunnarson flew a perfect 4-iron into the cup on the demanding 195 yd. 6th hole enroute to a T-3rd 74 but the day belonged to Old Sandwich PGA Head Professional Jay Wick who parlayed 5 birdies and an eagle - shooting a 3-under par 69 to win the Bobby Byrnes Pro-3Am today.

Gunnarson, PGA Head Professional at Rochester GC, was low pro the day before in a CCPAL tilt at New Seabury -  and on this day stood 3-under par after his 2nd career ace, but lost ground on the back nine to Wick and Ballymeade’s PGA Director of Golf Craig Garris who checked in with a stellar even par 72 effort. Wick’s torrid round got off to a blazing start as he eagled the par-5 opening hole after reaching the green with a 3-wood.  This was just the second tournament round of the spring  for Wick who also earned 15 valuable points in the Taylor-Made Dutch Wessner player-of-the-year race.  Tied for top spot in the Wessner are The Bay Club’s PGA Head Professional Greg Yeomans and Gunnarson at 21.33 points.

“TGC’s Scott Masse & Sandwich Hollows’ Jesse Schechtman after their round at Pocasset…perhaps the background TV show is a hint for these two”

A total of 23 foursomes teed it up thanks to the good graces of Pocasset’s unrivaled PGA staff: Richie Iwaszko, Jeff Halunen & Robert Foster and competed in a special tournament within a tournament as the winning squad qualified for this autumn’s Mohegan Sun Fall Classic.  In the 2 BB of 4 format, Brad Sherman, proprietor of 15thgolfclub.com and his merry men edged out Wick’s team by one shot.

(from l to r) Dominic Macone, Peter Hartmann, Kevin Friel, Brad Sherman & Bobby Byrne’s owner Jeff Moore who sponsored today’s tournament.

The star of the Sherman team was without argue…Friel, who has shed over 100 pounds in recent months, who shot a smooth 74 on his own ball.  His pro, Sherman, who is getting married in two weeks on the Cape,  was ever gracious in his acknowledging that the team win was due to Friel’s heroics throughout the round.

The Cape Cod PGA visits one of the favorite spots in all of New England for the next event on the schedule:  The PRO-1AM CHAMPIONSHIP at Farm Neck GC, Tuesday, May 15th.  Sign up now on BlueGolf.  All transportation info is outlined on the tournament information page on BlueGolf.

See you on the boat!

CAPE COD PGA
EASTWARD HO! PRO-3AM
APRIL 17, 2012:    Chatham, MA

THREE TIE FOR LOW PRO HONORS IN OPENER
On an unusually balmy April Chatham day three Cape Cod PGA golf professionals mastered the slick Eastward Ho greens to capture the first tourney of the season.

Firing two-over par 73’s, Rochester GC PGA Head Professional Rusty Gunnarson, The Bay Club’s PGA Head Professional Greg Yeomans and Cape Cod National’s PGA Head Professional Jim Campbell bested a field of 28 fellow pros as the temperatures reached 80 degrees with light winds off Pleasant Bay making  for an incredibly warm spring day. Yet, the scoring was not as easy on the field of 112 golfers as the weather was.

Jim Campbell

The lightning fast greens were so treacherous that only 7 other pros broke 80.  Tales of  3-putting, 4-putting and worse were the norm –  and the team scoring saw a bit of everything as well.  Four eagles were posted for the day, but in the 2BB of 4 format – even par made it into the prize money.

Led by Yeomans, three-time player-of-the-year, The Bay Club nipped Sandwich Hollows foursome by one shot –  with the winning team of Sean Higgins, Tom Lees and Dave Rivenburg firing an 11-under par 131.  The Jesse Schectman led Sandwich Hollows squad benefitted from both Schechtman’s solid 7th place 78 but also from teammate Tom Mulligan’s 74 – easily one of the best rounds of the day in the entire field.

The spectacular day in the sun was provided by Eastward Ho’s own PGA professionals – Head Pro Brian Hamilton and 1st Assistant Jason Winslow who not only hosted the huge field but competed as well.  Many thanks to these gentlemen and their top-notch staff.

                                          Winslow Team
from L to R: Mike Walther, Jason Winslow, Ed Benz, Craig Panaccione

The skins game produced two eagles on the par-5 11th hole by The Bay Club’s John Paesani and Ballymeade’s Craig Garris, while the vaunted 18th hole was birdied by TGC colleagues Scott Masse and John Macurdy who both were “sure” their birdies would stand up….and they were playing in back-to-back groups.

The real skins went to 15thClub.com’s Brad Sherman who eagled the par-4 3rd hole after driving the green, David Keville’s eagle on the par-5 17th hole (Chequessett) and finally to the last group of the day – New Seabury’s PGA teaching professional Rick Coleman who birdied the diabolical par-3   4th hole.  Each of the three skins were worth $370!

Many new faces appeared in this spring opener including The Ridge Club’s new PGA Head Professional Jay Askew and Black Rock’s PGA Head Professional Mark Gammons.

Askew Team
From L to R:  Jeff Stefani, Bob Gibson, Jay Askew, Bob Thorpe

The next event on the spring schedule is the Mohegan Sun Pro-3Am at Pocasset GC – May 12th.
