52 of the regions’ finest PGA Club Professionals were treated to an unbelievable day of competition on the beloved seaside links of The Hyannisport Club (view behind 5th green) under the able management of PGA Host Pro Mike Haberl and Head Superintendent Tom Calumbo (GCSAA).
(l to r) Sankaty Head’s PGA Assistant & HP Phil Cardwell & Mark Heartfield placed a solid 4th firing 65 while playing with the winning team: Cape Cod National’s PGA HP & Assistant Jim Campbell & Gregg Richbourg whose 62 was highlighted by Richbourg’s INCREDIBLE FRONT NINE OF -6 under par 30….and amazingly, partner Jim helped him on Hole #1 to help his team turn it in 29!

CARDWELL …..(and TEAM)….SWEEP TO VICTORY AT MIACOMET
(pictured left) Miacomet GC host PGA Head Professional Phil Truono (left) pictured here with the 2016 Spring Invitational winner Phil Cardwell – PGA playing out of Sankaty Head GC.
This year’s edition of the Miacomet Spring Invite featured 17 teams who enjoyed perfect weather and even better course conditions at one of Massachusetts’ finest public facilities (ranked #3 in the state!)
Sponsored by CCE’s Keith Tortorella and CAPE AIR’S Mike Migliore, a Stableford format for pros, amateurs & teams were won by:
PRO: Cardwell tallied five birdies and one eagle enroute to an actual 68/ collecting his winning total of 47 points in the Stableford format. Two of his partners in the Pro-Am competition placed in the money: Steve Boukus (41 pts) and John Penrose (44 pts). As a team (3rd member dear friend of the Chapter- Ray Conlon) Cardwell’s team checked in with a total of 108 pts in the best 2 of 4 format, edging the second place team led by Jay Wick –PGA whose team (105 pts) also had two individual amateurs crack the magic 40 point barrier – Frank Neumann (43 pts) & Jim Borho.

Rounding out other notable Amateur Stableford efforts: Chequesset’s Carl Brotman (41 pts) and Florida Man, Mark Mitchell who won the Am portion of the proceedings with 46 points. Points were awarded as follows: Bogey/1, Par/2, Birdie/ 4, Eagle 6, Albatross/8 with amateurs using 80% if their handicaps. Mitchell, playing with The Back Nine Club’s new PGA Professional Bob Giusti parlayed his four handicap into a fine 73 (3 birdies & 4 bogeys)
Finishing second Low Pro to Cardwell was Oyster Harbors’ PGA Lead Assistant Matt Baran, (3 X winner of the Cape Cod Chapter Championship) whose -2 under 70 converted to a solid 42 pts. Baran had it to -3 under after ten holes but fell victim to a pair of bogeys coming home.
Miacomet’s Nate Coe (blue socks) fails to convert birdie chance on the downwind 8th hole
(par 3) as teammates (Will Maier, who would sink his bird right after this photo) and Dan Benedetti (background) the new PGA Assistant at Miacomet look on. It is rumored that Coe ( a Londoner through and through) is a Tottenham supporter (poor boy). The Benedetti Group finished with 97 points, good for 5th place – “in the money”.!
Along with huge thanks to our two sponsors, the Chapter would like to acknowledge the outstanding hospitality of the well-run, efficient management team at Miacomet, led by two great golfers in their own right: Alan Costa (GM) and Phil Truono. The facility has never looked better, testimony to the now famous Sean Oberly, GCSAA Superintendent.

BOB GIUSTI’S 67 LEADS FIELD AT INDIAN POND
SPONSORED BY BOBBY BYRNES PUBS!
The Back Nine Club’s new PGA Head Professional Bob Giusti, 66, nearly shot his age firing a -5 under par 67 to win the BOBBY BYRNES Pro-3Am besting a field of 18 fellow pros at the tremendous Indian Pond CC. He did not record one bogey, birdieing holes 2-3-9-12-13 enroute to “his second best score on this course…” since Giusti had held the course record of 66 many years ago.
Low Pro Bob Giusti (67) (far right) and team!
Amazingly, Giusti needed every birdie as Hatherly GC’s PGA HP Chip Johnson finished just minutes after him shooting a 68 which included 5 birdies & one eagle. And, right on their tails were more great scores – Gregg Richbourg, 70 - (Cape Cod National PGA Assistant), Rochester’s PGA HP Rusty Gunnarson, 71 and a pair of even-par 72’s recorded by 2015 Wessner POY champion Bob Miller (PGA – The Club at Yarmouthport) and 3-time Chapter Champion Matt Baran (Oyster Harbors PGA Assistant). Baran & Richbourg were both coming off stellar rounds at the NEPGA Stroke Play held two days earlier at Black Rock – where their 73’s were good for T-4 in a strong 67 player field. In addition, Richbourg, who had an ace last week in the CCPGA Pocasset visit finished first in the Black Rock PRO PRO blind draw but just missed the Indian Pond version won by Jim Campbell (Cape Cod National PGA HP), John Rainone (North Kingstown PGA HP) and Johnson, whose -10 62 edged out five other teams.
The other big story of the day was the incredible team score returned by the troops from CC of Halifax, led by PGA HP Brendan Reilly who was joined by Jameson Lee, 25, John Heffernan,26, and Dave Pierce Jr.,26 - combining for a format record setting 2 BB of 4 score of 122 (-22 under par)! This young team took no prisoners as they won the team event by five shots over an also very impressing score of 127 turned in by Richbourg and his team of Lower Cape stalwarts: Rich Greisch, Brian Reilly & Bill Stone whose score would win most Pro-Ams if not for the record setters from Halifax.
The winning team comprised of all low handicappers had a total of 14 birdies & two eagles with Pierce leading the way with his own score of 70. Naturally, all four players played important roles to achieve this incredible score.
The Cape Cod Chapter of the NEPGA wishes to thank presenting sponsor JEFF MOORE, proprietor of three BOBBY BYRNES PUBS on the Cape – Mashpee Commons, Sandwich & Hyannis and also the founder of THE LANES BOWL & BISTRO in Mashpee as well.
Welcoming back to the sponsor rolls – Bob Browne, owner of SEMPER FINE WINES, who has donated many cases of wine for CTP proximity prizes to be used at all Pro-Ams.
Best of Luck to all Chapter Professionals teeing it up at next weeks’ Section PRO-ASSISTANT at The Bay Club and the PRO-1 AM CHAMPIONSHIP at Pinehills one week later. The Chapter resumes its schedule June 1st at MIACOMET INVITATIONAL PRO-3AM on the island of Nantucket – one of the highest ranked public golf facilities in the Commonwealth! Just a few spots left – register now!

RICHBOURG PARLAYS 4TH CAREER ACE INTO TWO VICTORIES!
Cape Cod National’s PGA Assistant Golf Professional Gregg Richbourg had a great day!
Competing against 18 of his fellow CCPGA Chapter colleagues ( and their teams) he recorded his 4th career hole-in-one on the uphill 150 yard 15th hole at the manicured Pocasset Golf Club today enroute to his 3-under par 69 to win low pro by three shots – and led his team to an equally impressive victory in the 2 BB of 4 competition – joined by John Crook, John Todd and the Big E, Eric Strzepek as they fired a -12 under par 132 to also win by three. Richbourg did not make bogey until the difficult 18th hole after birdies at #2 - #14 and his ace put him -4 under par. His winning foursome not only took down the $600 first place prize & pocketed 4 team skins, but also won 4 Orange Whip trainers donated by company owner and old friend, Jim Hackenburg, formerly PGA HP at Edgartown GC before enjoying an incredible success story with his products to the nation-wide golf community.
Richbourg barely misses birdie on the 9th hole but still shot 69 to win The Lanes Bowl & Bistro Pro-3Am.
While Richbourg was nestling his 7-iron into the cup on the 15th the Cape Chapter welcomed back longtime loyal club pro Brendan Reilly, who has taken over the top duties at The CC of Halifax this season….and finished runner-up to Gregg with a solid even-par 72 easily ahead of 3rd place pro Jay Wick, PGA HP at Old Sandwich GC who checked in with 75 on a slightly windy day chilled by the cool breezes off Buzzards Bay. Scoring was difficult on the closing holes as the home nine turned into the wind – with an average pro score of 5.1 on the par-4 18th hole!

Completing the theme of the day: the Chapter was hosted by Pocasset GC’s PGA HP Jeff Halunen in his 2nd year at the helm after the “official” retirement of Richie Iwaszko who was last reported going the speed limit on Rte. 66 across the country somewhere!
The Lanes Bowl & Bistro’s Jeff Moore (l) and partner Dave Grady
The Chapter’s next tournament is the Pro-3Am at Indian Pond CC – May 11th – with just a few spots remaining.
